Tim Langhorn read economics at Clare College Cambridge. After a time dealing with tariffs, statistics and trade promotion in the mechanical engineering industry, he spent 21 years as a senior manager with global electrical engineer ABB, leading acquisitions, disposals and joint venture and business creation, adding £350m revenue and 10,000 employees and so establishing the greater part of ABB’s UK presence. Areas addressed ranged across rail transportation (including the privatization of British Rail Engineering Ltd) electrical engineering and equipment and electricity generation – dealing with companies including ICI, GEC and the oil majors. Most recently, having assisted it to an MBO, he was invited to invest in, to be on the board of and chair the investment vehicle of the company that became Quartzelec Ltd. He also sits as a director of Quartzelec’s pension trustee.
